Research can be defined as the search for knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish facts. The primary purpose for applied research (as opposed to basic research) is discovering, interpreting, and the development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge on a wide variety of scientific matters of our world and the universe. Research can use the scientific method, but need not do so.

Scientific research relies on the application of the scientific method, a harnessing of curiosity. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and the properties of the world around us. It makes practical applications possible. Scientific research is funded by public authorities, by charitable organisations and by private groups, including many companies. Scientific research can be subdivided into different classifications according to their academic and application disciplines.

Historical research is embodied in the scientific method.

The term research is also used to describe an entire collection of information about a particular subject.

What is stem cell research and how is it connected to abortions?
Q. I hear that abortions can be good in the sense of stem cell research. But I do not know what that is, so if someone could explain to me what it is and how abortion would benefit for stem cell research that would be great. Thanks!

A. The problem came up when they were creating stem cells in a lab, they beleive that destroying stem cells is like destroying life. But now they can get stem cells from living tissue or the yummy leftovers after a birth so there is no need to create them just to destroy them.

What current research is being done on mummification?
Q. I have to finish a research paper by tomorrow for my school science fair, and my project is to mummify a fish. But my science teacher has this warped perception of everything, so I have to find some current research being done on the topic of mummification. Does anyone know a good place to find this information? A direct link would be nice.

What exactly is the difference between a book report and a research paper (both college level)?
Q. For my History and Culture of India class, we have to pick a topic for a book report or research paper by Thursday. I narrowed my choices down to two books, so I'm good on that. But I'm confused on the difference between a book report or research paper; don't you need to do some research to back up your opinions in a book report, too? Thank you!

A. book report is just that a report about a book which often is one's opinion of the book supported by passages found in the book. Book reports are limited to what information you find within that one tome that you writing upon. Whereas a research paper is research into a specific topic, not a book. For example if you were to do a research paper on topics such as suttee or thuggee which are parts of the Indian culture. Suttee being that ritualistic death of a widow at the funeral of her spouse and thuggee being a cult group that worships the god Kali and murdered hundreds as part of their worship. your research paper would be footnoted by other books you used to support your facts on the history and circumstances of the topic chosen.
