A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν, pl. φαινόμενα - phenomena) is any observable occurrence. In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, In physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum.

What wind phenomena is similar to a dust devil?
Q. I witnessed something like a small but very intense dust devil, only a few metres high but enough to uproot vegetation and cut a swathe through a small river. Unlike a dust devil it formed and travelled over rough grassland in overcast conditions of perhaps 10 Celsius. It travelled for about 500 metres at about 10kmh (6mph) before dissipating. Any ideas?

A. This description does not reveal any of the characteristics of a tornado (associated tstm, vertical extent). It is not a dust devil which forms under very hot surface temperatures and strong lapse rates. I am at a loss to explain it, unless there were other evidences of turbulence which would suggest this to be just a very strong eddy vortex. A good reason to carry a camera. This would perhaps make an interesting letter to the editor of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Is it better to seek natural explanations for natural phenomena or to settle for a comforting lie?
Q. Even when the truth may be a hard pill to swallow, wouldn't it be better for humanity if we threw away comforting beliefs with no basis in reality?

A. prayers=coincidence, more "un answered" than "answered", miracles=are things that are scientifically possible but have a low chance of occurring... neither one has scientific evidence to prove divine intervention natural real explanations only are acceptable, lies will not do
